The Gujarat Police have successfully busted a scam related to the NEET UG 2026 examination, arresting a 19-year-old accused for allegedly duping students with a refund scheme. The scam involved promises of refunds for the cancelled exam, targeting anxious students and their families.
Details of the Scam
The accused, a resident of Ahmedabad, allegedly created a fake website and social media accounts to lure students. He promised full refunds for the NEET UG 2026 application fees, claiming that the exam had been cancelled due to administrative reasons. Students were asked to provide their personal details and bank account information for the refund process.
According to police officials, the accused managed to swindle several students before the fraud was detected. The total amount involved is still being calculated, but initial estimates suggest it could be in the lakhs.
Police Action and Investigation
The Cyber Crime Cell of the Gujarat Police received multiple complaints from students who had fallen victim to the scam. Following a thorough investigation, the accused was traced and arrested from his residence in Ahmedabad. Police have seized electronic devices, including a laptop and mobile phone, which were used in the crime.
“We have arrested the 19-year-old and are investigating his connections. He used sophisticated methods to appear legitimate, including creating a fake website that mimicked the official NEET portal,” said a senior police officer.
Modus Operandi
The scammer targeted students who had applied for NEET UG 2026, sending them emails and messages claiming that the exam had been cancelled and that they were eligible for a refund. The messages included links to a fake website where students were asked to enter their login credentials and bank details.
Once the information was obtained, the accused would transfer funds from the students' accounts. Some victims reported losing amounts ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000.
Authorities Issue Warning
The Gujarat Police have urged students and parents to be cautious and not to fall prey to such scams. They advised that official communications regarding NEET exams are only sent through the National Testing Agency (NTA) and students should verify any suspicious messages.
“We appeal to students to report any such fraudulent activities immediately. Do not share personal or financial information with unknown sources,” the police added.
The accused has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. He has been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
