Haryana Sanskrit Gurukuls to Adopt Three-Language Formula Under NEP 2020
Haryana Gurukuls to Implement Three-Language Formula

Gurgaon: Sanskrit gurukuls across Haryana are set to adopt the three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, a move expected to strengthen multilingual learning. The decision was discussed during a meeting chaired by Haryana School Education Board Chairman Shankar Lal Dhoopar with subject experts and heads of various Sanskrit institutes. The meeting focused on developing a curriculum and pass criteria aligned with the NEP’s multilingual education framework.

Implementation Strategy

Addressing the gathering, Dhoopar said the three-language formula can be implemented effectively in Gurukuls because Sanskrit already forms the foundation of their academic system. Under the proposed structure, Hindi or the state’s regional language may be taught as the first language, Sanskrit as the second language, and English or another modern Indian language as the third.

Expert Recommendations

Experts participating in the meeting stressed that an integrated approach to teaching Sanskrit, Hindi and English could significantly improve students’ language skills. They suggested using Sanskrit shlokas, Vedic texts and classical literature for translation exercises in Hindi and English, enabling students to gain proficiency in all three languages while sharpening their analytical and communication abilities. “The purpose of the three-language formula is not to impose any language, but to make students multilingual and broaden their learning opportunities,” Dhoopar said.

Curriculum Structure

The chairman also noted that Sanskrit grammar and Sanskrit literature, already core components of Gurukul education, could be structured as separate academic papers under the Sanskrit curriculum. While grammar helps develop linguistic accuracy and logical thinking, literature connects students with India’s ancient knowledge traditions, cultural values and ethical teachings. Detailed guidelines regarding the three-language formula, curriculum structure and pass criteria for Sanskrit gurukuls and institutes would be issued soon.
