Hisar-born Indian astrophysicist Devesh Nandal, a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian, has been appointed to the UAP Science Advisory Council. This Harvard-led panel is tasked with applying rigorous scientific analysis to the study of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).
Council Formation and Purpose
The council was assembled by Harvard astrophysicist Professor Avi Loeb at the request of stakeholders in the US Executive Branch. These include the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the wider US Intelligence Community. The council aims to distinguish scientifically supported explanations from speculation while examining anomalous observations.
Nandal's Expertise and Role
Nandal was selected for his expertise in numerical analysis and astrophysics. His work spans theoretical modeling, stellar evolution, and data-driven interpretation of extreme astrophysical systems. His contributions will be crucial in applying rigorous scientific methods to UAP data.
Family Background
Nandal belongs to a family with a strong background in education and public service. His father, Sumer Singh Nandal, is Deputy Director (Sports) in Haryana’s Youth and Welfare Department. His mother, Shakuntla Nandal, is a sociology professor who has taught at colleges in Hisar and Panipat.
Academic Journey
Nandal completed his master’s research at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, focusing on measuring the Lamb shift of anti-hydrogen. He earned his doctorate from the University of Geneva, where he studied the formation and evolution of first-generation massive and supermassive stars. This academic background provides him with the skills necessary for analyzing anomalous astrophysical phenomena.
