ICICI Bank has introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments on its iMobile app, aiming to enhance security and convenience for users. The feature allows customers to authorize transactions using their fingerprint or FaceID, reducing reliance on traditional UPI PINs for smaller payments.
Key Features of Biometric UPI Payments
The biometric authentication is available for UPI transactions up to Rs 5,000. For amounts exceeding this limit, users will still need to enter their UPI PIN. This move is expected to speed up transactions while maintaining security for higher-value payments.
Device Compatibility
The feature is supported on Android devices running iMobile version 30.0 and above, utilizing fingerprint sensors. On iOS devices, iMobile version 28.2 or later enables FaceID for authentication. Both platforms ensure a seamless and secure payment experience.
How to Enable Biometric Authentication
- Log in to the ICICI iMobile app.
- Navigate to UPI settings.
- Select the option to enable biometric verification.
- Verify your identity using your UPI PIN.
Once enabled, users can authenticate UPI payments by simply scanning their fingerprint or using FaceID, making transactions faster and more convenient.
Competitive Landscape
ICICI Bank's move follows PhonePe, which earlier introduced biometric authentication for UPI payments in India. This trend reflects the growing emphasis on user-friendly security measures in digital payments.
With this update, ICICI aims to provide a balance between security and ease of use, catering to the increasing demand for contactless and quick payment solutions.
