The Indian Navy has issued a call to domestic defence manufacturers to develop and produce 80-mm aero rockets for its fleet of MiG-29K fighter jets. This initiative is designed to eliminate dependency on imported ammunition and further the government's vision of defence self-reliance.
Indigenisation Drive
Under this project, all components of the rockets must be sourced and manufactured within India. The move aligns with the Indian Navy's broader objective of achieving 100 per cent indigenisation by the year 2047. By involving local industry, the Navy aims to reduce costs, enhance supply chain security, and foster technological innovation within the country.
Strategic Importance
The MiG-29K is a crucial asset for the Navy, operating from aircraft carriers and providing air superiority and strike capabilities. Indigenous production of its ammunition will not only save foreign exchange but also ensure uninterrupted availability of critical stores. This step is part of a series of measures to strengthen the domestic defence ecosystem under the 'Make in India' initiative.
