Instagram Testing New Algorithm Controls for Feed Personalization
Instagram Testing Algorithm Controls for Feed Personalization

Instagram has announced it is testing new algorithm controls that will allow users to have more say over the content that appears in their feed. The feature, currently being rolled out to a small percentage of users globally, aims to address long-standing complaints about the platform's algorithm-driven recommendations.

How the New Controls Work

Users in the test group will see a new option in their feed settings labeled "Feed Personalization." This feature presents three distinct modes: "Following," which shows posts from accounts a user follows in chronological order; "Favorites," which prioritizes content from a user's selected list of favorite accounts; and "Suggested," which uses the algorithm to recommend posts based on user activity. According to Instagram, the goal is to give users more transparency and control over what they see.

A spokesperson for Meta, Instagram's parent company, stated: "We are always exploring ways to improve the Instagram experience. This test is about giving people more choice and control over their feed. We want to make sure that users can easily find the content that is most relevant and interesting to them."

Why This Matters

The move comes amid growing scrutiny of social media algorithms and their impact on user experience and mental health. Instagram has faced criticism for prioritizing engaging but often polarizing content, leading to calls for more user-centric controls. Earlier this year, a survey by the Pew Research Center found that 64% of social media users feel they have little control over what appears on their feeds.

By offering these options, Instagram is responding to user demand for more autonomy. The "Favorites" mode, in particular, allows users to curate a list of up to 50 accounts whose posts will be given priority, ensuring they don't miss updates from close friends or important creators.

Impact on Creators and Businesses

The new controls could significantly affect how content creators and businesses reach their audiences. If users opt for the "Following" or "Favorites" modes, algorithmic recommendations for new accounts may decrease, potentially reducing discoverability for smaller creators. However, Instagram believes that providing users with choice will lead to higher engagement and satisfaction in the long run.

"We are committed to supporting creators and businesses, but we also want to empower users," the spokesperson added. "We are monitoring the test closely and will make adjustments based on feedback."

Rollout and Availability

The test is currently limited to a small number of users in select countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Instagram has not provided a timeline for a wider rollout, but the feature is expected to be refined based on user feedback before being made available globally.

Users can check if they have access to the new controls by navigating to Settings > Feed > Feed Personalization. If the option is available, they can switch between modes at any time.
