Scientists and Fishermen Unite at World Ocean Science Congress to Explore Machli App
In a significant collaboration aimed at enhancing sustainable fishing practices, scientists and fishermen gathered on Tuesday at the fourth World Ocean Science Congress in Panaji. The focus was on understanding the practical applications of Machli, a cutting-edge marine advisory app designed to revolutionize fishing in the face of climate change.
How Machli App Transforms Fishing with Precision Tracking
Developed by a Mumbai-based private foundation, Machli leverages data from the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad, including sea surface temperature and oceanographic conditions. The app integrates satellite-based marine intelligence with a user-friendly, multilingual interface tailored for India's coastal communities.
Key Features of the Machli App:
- Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) Identification: This feature helps fishermen pinpoint areas where fish are likely to aggregate, based on species-specific responses to sea temperatures and conditions. S Senthilkumaran, head of platforms and applications at the foundation, explained that INCOIS analyzes these parameters to identify zones, which are then simplified for easy access via the app.
- Distance-Based Planning: The PFZ feature covers three distances—20 km, 50 km, and 100 km—allowing fishermen to plan trips according to vessel capacity and fuel efficiency.
- Real-Time Weather and Safety Alerts: The app provides up-to-date forecasts on weather conditions, wind speed, wave height, sea currents, and cyclone alerts. By enabling GPS services, users can access hyperlocal forecasts for their departure points and fishing routes, crucial during sudden weather changes.
- Emergency SOS Function: An integrated SOS contact function enables quick access to assistance services in case of emergencies.
- Offline Accessibility: Recognizing connectivity challenges at sea, the app allows users to download PFZ data while in network coverage and access it offline later.
Enhancing Accessibility and Support for Fishermen
Machli is free to use and currently available in 10 official Indian languages, though Konkani is not yet included. Developers highlighted that while several marine advisory apps exist, many are either paid or limited in language accessibility, making Machli a standout solution.
In addition to marine advisories, the app offers state-wise information on government schemes for fishermen. A built-in helpline and feedback system allows users to submit grievances or suggestions directly through the platform, fostering continuous improvement.
Future Developments and Broader Implications
While the current version focuses on identifying fishing zones, developers are working on adding species-specific information in future updates. This advancement could further refine fishing accuracy and sustainability.
The collaboration at the congress underscores the growing importance of technology in addressing climate-induced uncertainties in fishing. By bridging the gap between scientific data and practical application, Machli aims to empower coastal communities with tools for safer, more efficient, and environmentally conscious fishing practices.
