The Maharashtra state agriculture department has initiated a pilot project for booking fertilizers through the 'Framework For Fertilizer Sale' mobile application in Kolhapur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts. This follows successful trial runs in a Haveli tehsil village in Pune district.
Key Features of the Application
Aadhaar authentication is currently mandatory for placing fertilizer orders. While the farmer ID is optional at present, officials stated that it will eventually become the primary criterion for booking, as it is linked to land holding. Farmers must enter details such as land holding and crop type, after which the app calculates the required fertilizer quantity and allows booking from nearby shops based on availability.
Objectives and Benefits
Namdev Parit, Deputy Director of the state agriculture department, explained that the central government developed the app with multiple objectives. It aims to help farmers access subsidized fertilizers without hassle, prevent hoarding of excess fertilizers, and ensure balanced nutrition for crops. After booking, farmers receive a QR code and token number. The order remains reserved at the chosen shop for three days, allowing farmers to purchase at their convenience. Trainers will be deployed to educate farmers, sarpanches, and local representatives on app usage.
Farmer Concerns and Coverage
Many farmers lack IDs. Official data shows that only 72% of farmers in Kolhapur district have IDs. A farmer from Kolhapur expressed concerns, questioning the compulsion to use the app and whether it guarantees sufficient fertilizer availability. According to government data, neither Kolhapur nor Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar are among the top five districts with maximum farmer ID coverage.
