The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) convened a meeting with environmental organizations, researchers, and civic partners to address urban environmental challenges and develop practical, long-term solutions for recycling Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols. The session focused on transforming festival waste and daily municipal waste into valuable resources through scientific planning, decentralized systems, and citizen participation.
Key Highlights from the Meeting
The Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) presented details of its PoP recovery pilot project and showcased small-scale waste processing technologies suitable for local adoption. ICT also outlined decentralized waste management models that reduce transportation burdens and improve segregation and recovery at the source.
Proposed Recycling Project
A proposal to establish a dedicated recycling project in Navi Mumbai through ICT was discussed. Commissioner Kailas Shinde stated that the corporation would examine the feasibility of this initiative. Representatives from the idol makers association agreed to use recycled PoP to produce new idols, supporting a circular economy approach.
Innovative Reuse Models
NuoTerra, a sustainability-first enterprise, presented an innovative reuse model that converts recycled PoP into school furniture, such as study tables. The organization proposed an agreement with the civic body to collect and hand over discarded idols for processing.
Citizen Participation and Safety
Project Mumbai suggested creating a citizen volunteering portal to increase public involvement in environmental initiatives. They also introduced the Agni Suraksha Vision, which aims to build a network of trained volunteers to improve city safety through community action.
Urban Biodiversity Management
Urban biodiversity management was also discussed. Commissioner Shinde cited the recent tree census, which revealed more than 15 lakh trees across over 225 locations, and emphasized that the city is prioritizing indigenous plantations to strengthen ecological value.
