Good news for residents of Delhi-NCR! In a major development, the Noida International Airport (NIA), also known as Jewar Airport, is set to commence operations on June 15, 2026. This upcoming airport is being hailed as a game changer for India's aviation sector.
A Milestone Announcement
The launch of the Noida International Airport at Jewar is expected to significantly ease the pressure on the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi. This long-awaited milestone for the National Capital Region (NCR) will transform regional connectivity. The new airport, a modern greenfield aviation hub, is designed to improve passenger movement, cargo handling, and travel convenience for millions living across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and western Uttar Pradesh.
The Noida International Airport made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), stating: "A major milestone in the journey of Noida International Airport. We are pleased to announce that #NIAirport will commence commercial flight operations from 15th June 2026, opening a new gateway for passengers, airlines, and cargo operators in the National Capital Region and North India. @IndiGo6E will operate the first flight, followed shortly by @AkasaAir and @AirIndiaX. We look forward to welcoming our first passengers soon!"
A New Gateway for Travelers
For years, Delhi's IGI airport has handled a massive number of passengers annually. The launch of Noida airport will provide an alternative departure and arrival point for travelers in the NCR. Strategically located in Jewar, the airport will serve not only Delhi but also the rapidly growing urban clusters in Uttar Pradesh. For travelers in Noida, Ghaziabad, and Greater Noida, the new airport could dramatically cut travel time compared to reaching IGI. In its initial phase, the airport will manage approximately 12 million passengers per year, with plans to scale up capacity to 70 million passengers in the future.
What Should Travelers Expect?
According to updates, IndiGo will operate the inaugural flight on June 15, 2026. Other carriers such as Akasa Air and Air India Express are also expected to begin operations shortly thereafter. Initially, travelers can expect mostly domestic routes, with international operations likely to follow in subsequent phases. However, detailed schedules, destinations, and ticket bookings are yet to be fully announced.
Facilities at the Airport
The airport boasts a modern design and, in its first phase, will feature a state-of-the-art terminal with high-tech check-in and baggage systems, self-baggage drop counters, multiple boarding gates, dedicated domestic and international lounges, advanced security systems, and modern immigration systems. The airport is being developed with sustainability in mind, aiming for energy-efficient operations and a passenger-friendly design. This long-term vision means travelers can expect better route networks, more airline options, and potentially competitive airfares as the airport matures into a major aviation hub.
A Game Changer for NCR Travel
The introduction of Noida International Airport will decongest Delhi's main airport and open up new routes for travelers. It is expected to redefine air travel in the region. For travelers, June 15, 2026, marks the beginning of a new chapter in aviation convenience and connectivity.
