Pune Students Caught with AI Glasses in Exam

Pune: Two engineering students were recently found wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses while appearing for semester examinations at the Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune. Vidya Yeravdekar, Pro Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, stated that since the glasses can be used to access artificial intelligence, click pictures, and perform other functions, students should not wear them during examinations. Consequently, the invigilator caught the students.

“No evidence of them accessing ChatGPT or using it for unfair means has been found yet. However, a report has been filed with the Unfair Means Committee, which at the institution level and then at the university level will investigate the matter, interact with the students, and then decide the punishment. The students have been debarred from that examination pending the committee’s report,” said Yeravdekar.

This incident highlights the growing challenges educational institutions face with the advent of advanced wearable technology. The Ray-Ban Meta glasses, a product of a collaboration between Ray-Ban and Meta, are equipped with a camera, microphone, and speakers, and can integrate with AI assistants. While they offer convenience for everyday use, their potential for misuse in academic settings has raised concerns.

The university has taken a proactive stance by referring the case to the Unfair Means Committee. The committee will conduct a thorough investigation, including interviewing the students, to determine whether any unfair advantage was sought. Depending on the findings, the students could face penalties ranging from a warning to more severe disciplinary action.

Educational experts emphasize the need for clear policies regarding the use of smart glasses and similar devices in examination halls. As technology evolves, institutions must update their rules to prevent cheating while balancing the legitimate uses of such gadgets. The Symbiosis incident serves as a cautionary tale for both students and administrators.
