The Punjab government is set to launch a digital learning platform aimed at improving English proficiency among students in government schools and narrowing the learning gap with their private school counterparts. The initiative will provide pre-recorded academic content for students from Class IX to XII across all 19,000 government schools in the state.
Targeting Rural and Semi-Urban Areas
The program specifically targets students in rural and semi-urban areas, who often lack access to quality English-learning support during a critical stage of their education. To address this, the school education department plans to deploy an integrated Learning Management System (LMS) and Content Management System (CMS) loaded with digital academic content. The platform aims to give students in remote areas access to the same quality of instruction available in urban centers.
Implementation and Infrastructure
The department has initiated the process of hiring an agency to deploy the platform and integrate it with a digital content library for English learning. Punjab has already installed more than 8,300 interactive flat panels in over 3,000 government schools under its 'Smart Classroom' initiative. The LMS-CMS platform will be compatible with these devices and will also support access through projectors and televisions.
The platform will offer pre-recorded video lessons, animations, and simulations aligned with the Punjab School Education Board curriculum. It will also include assessments, automated grading, detailed explanations, and personalized learning pathways based on student performance.
Self-Paced Learning Ecosystem
Designed as a self-paced learning ecosystem, the platform will enable students to revisit lessons, revise concepts, and strengthen language and problem-solving skills outside the classroom. It is intended to complement, not replace, classroom teaching, while providing teachers with structured lesson plans and curated digital content.
The system will support bilingual learning through English and Punjabi interfaces and instructional material. A teaching-at-the-right-level approach will be followed, with content designed to address learning gaps and promote conceptual understanding rather than rote learning.
Assessment and Analytics
Each learning unit will be followed by an online assessment. The platform will maintain a question bank of at least 30,000 questions and generate proficiency levels based on performance. Students will receive immediate feedback and guidance on relevant learning modules, while percentile rankings will be available at class, school, district, and state levels.
The platform will also feature real-time analytics dashboards to track student performance, engagement, and learning outcomes. A dedicated dashboard for the school education department will enable monitoring at the state, district, block, school, teacher, and student levels.
