Spotify has quietly discontinued its Premium Lite plan in India, just six months after its launch in November 2025. The budget-friendly tier, priced at Rs 59 per month, was introduced to attract price-sensitive users in the Indian market. However, according to sources, the plan failed to gain significant traction among subscribers.
What Was Spotify Premium Lite?
Spotify Premium Lite offered ad-free music streaming with limited features. Unlike the standard Premium plan, it did not include offline downloads, on-demand playback, or high-quality audio. Users could listen to music without interruptions but with basic functionality. The plan was available only in India and a few other markets.
Why Was It Discontinued?
Industry analysts suggest that the low adoption rate was the primary reason for the discontinuation. Many users preferred the free ad-supported tier or opted for the full Premium plan with additional benefits. Spotify has not officially commented on the decision, but the company is focusing on its core Premium offering and expanding its podcast and audiobook library.
Existing Premium Lite subscribers are being migrated to the standard Premium plan. Spotify is offering them a discounted rate for the first few months to ease the transition. The company has also introduced new family and duo plans to cater to different user segments.
Impact on Indian Users
The discontinuation leaves budget-conscious users with fewer options. Spotify's free tier remains available with ads, while competitors like JioSaavn, Gaana, and Apple Music offer their own budget plans. It remains to be seen if Spotify will introduce another low-cost plan in the future.
Spotify continues to invest in the Indian market, with localized content and partnerships. The company recently launched Spotify Clips, a short-form video feature, and expanded its podcast offerings in regional languages.
