Tech Job Openings See 8% YoY Decline in July 2024
Tech job openings in India experienced an 8% year-on-year decline in July 2024, with the IT sector and manufacturing industry witnessing the most significant drops, according to a report by foundit (formerly Monster India). The report analyzed online job posting data across various sectors and cities.
IT Sector Leads the Decline
The IT, software, and hardware sectors saw a 12% decrease in job postings compared to July 2023. The manufacturing sector followed with a 10% decline. Other sectors like banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) also registered a 7% drop. However, some sectors bucked the trend: the retail and e-commerce sector posted a 5% increase, and the hospitality and travel sector saw a 3% rise.
City-Wise Trends
Among major cities, Bengaluru recorded the steepest decline in tech job openings at 15% year-on-year. Chennai and Hyderabad followed with 12% and 10% drops, respectively. In contrast, Pune and Kolkata saw modest growth of 2% and 1%, respectively. Delhi-NCR and Mumbai remained relatively stable with minor fluctuations.
Impact of Global Economic Uncertainty
According to the report, the decline in tech hiring is attributed to global economic uncertainty and cautious hiring by companies. "The tech sector is facing a slowdown due to macroeconomic factors, leading to a more conservative approach to recruitment," said Sekhar Garisa, CEO of foundit. He added that companies are focusing on upskilling existing employees rather than hiring new talent.
Demand for Specific Skills
Despite the overall decline, demand for certain skills remained strong. Job postings for artificial intelligence and machine learning roles increased by 8% year-on-year. Similarly, data science and analytics roles saw a 6% uptick. Cybersecurity roles also grew by 4%, reflecting the ongoing need for digital security.
Outlook for the Coming Months
The report suggests that the tech hiring market may stabilize in the coming months as companies adjust to the new normal. "We expect hiring to pick up in Q4 2024, driven by festive season demand and year-end projects," Garisa noted. However, the recovery will be gradual, with a focus on niche skills and experienced professionals.
Conclusion
The 8% year-on-year decline in tech job openings in July 2024 underscores the cautious hiring environment in India's tech sector. While some industries and cities are hit harder, emerging technologies continue to drive demand for specialized roles. Companies are likely to maintain a selective hiring approach until global economic conditions improve.
