Telangana CM Flags Off Vikram-1 Private Orbital Launch Vehicle

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao on Monday flagged off Vikram-1, India's first private orbital launch vehicle, developed by Skyroot Aerospace. The event took place at the T-Hub facility in Hyderabad, marking a significant milestone in the country's private space sector.

Vikram-1: A Game-Changer in Space Technology

Vikram-1 is a three-stage solid-fuel rocket capable of placing small satellites into low Earth orbit. It is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India's space program. The launch vehicle is designed to be cost-effective and efficient, catering to the growing demand for small satellite launches globally.

Skyroot Aerospace: Pioneering Private Space Ventures

Skyroot Aerospace, founded in 2018 by former ISRO scientists, aims to democratize access to space. The company has already tested its Raman-1 engine and is now readying for the maiden flight of Vikram-1. The vehicle can carry payloads of up to 480 kg to an altitude of 500 km.

Government Support and Future Plans

The Telangana government has been proactive in supporting space startups. The CM assured continued support for the private space sector. Skyroot plans to conduct the first orbital launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota later this year. The company has also secured funding from various investors, including the state government.

Significance for India's Space Industry

This development aligns with the Indian government's push for private sector participation in space activities. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been actively transferring technology and providing facilities to private players. Vikram-1 is expected to boost India's share in the global small satellite launch market, which is projected to grow substantially in the coming years.

The successful launch of Vikram-1 will place India among a select group of countries with private orbital launch capabilities. It also underscores the potential of Hyderabad as a hub for aerospace innovation.
