Telegram CEO Criticizes India's Ban Ahead of NEET-UG Re-examination
Telegram CEO Slams India Ban Ahead of NEET-UG

The Indian government's decision to restrict Telegram ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination has drawn sharp criticism from the platform's founder, Pavel Durov. He argues that the move unfairly targets ordinary users rather than those responsible for leaking exam materials.

Durov's Response to the Ban

In a post on X, Durov stated that the week-long restriction punishes over 150 million legitimate Telegram users in India, while the actual perpetrators simply migrate to other apps. He questioned the effectiveness of the ban, noting that leaks have continued on alternative platforms.

Reason Behind the Restriction

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ordered the ban until June 22, covering the NEET-UG re-examination scheduled for June 21. Additionally, Telegram must disable its message-editing feature in India until June 30, as fraud networks allegedly exploited it to fabricate evidence of paper leaks.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) described the measures as temporary, aimed at protecting candidates from scams promising access to exam papers. The NTA has consistently denied any leak, stating that no paper exists outside its secure chain of custody.

Background and Implications

Over 22 lakh candidates are expected to appear for the re-examination after the original May 3 test was canceled due to leak allegations. The controversy has sparked debate about whether restricting an entire platform is an effective strategy to combat exam fraud.

While the government's intent is to disrupt rackets operating on Telegram, critics argue that such broad measures infringe on digital rights and fail to address the root cause of leaks. The incident highlights the challenges of balancing security concerns with user freedoms in the digital age.
