Terrariums, the miniature gardens encased in glass, are becoming a popular trend in Hyderabad, especially among IT professionals. These self-sustaining ecosystems use a biological cycle where plants thrive on recycled moisture and oxygen, making them ideal for desks and windowsills in air-conditioned offices and apartments.
Origins and Appeal
The concept traces back to 19th-century "Wardian Cases," designed to protect exotic plants during maritime transport. Today, terrariums offer a low-maintenance way to stay connected with nature. Srinath Gunti, who organizes terrarium workshops in the city, explains, "A terrarium is a small, self-sustaining ecosystem with minimal maintenance. People are drawn in by how real and alive the setups look."
Participants find the experience therapeutic. Sai Krishna, who built a terrarium at a workshop, says, "It is truly fascinating to see a self-sustaining ecosystem thrive in such a small space. Working with plants helped me find calm during a stressful phase."
Growing Popularity of Themed Terrariums
Dhana Lakshmi Balasubramani, regional manager of an events company, notes, "From natural builds to themed setups, terrariums come in varied styles. Beach terrariums have seen the biggest response in Hyderabad because people enjoy personalizing them with tiny figures." Themes include DIY, beach, and fountain setups, using colored sand, clay, and handcrafted elements.
Workshop Participation on the Rise
Arun Kumar Singari, a hobbyist, observes, "Many people initially walk in out of curiosity, but once they experience building a miniature ecosystem, they become far more interested." Shivani Mallika Talari, who organizes workshops, adds, "When I started, we had around 9 to 10 participants. Now, I see 20 to 30 people per session. There is no fixed age group — children as young as seven take part."
Tips for Terrarium Maintenance
- Use cocopeat and charcoal for proper drainage instead of regular soil.
- Avoid succulents; opt for indoor plants suited for humidity.
- Don’t overcrowd; allow enough space for plants to grow.
- Keep your terrarium in indirect sunlight or under soft artificial light.
- Avoid overwatering; mist lightly only when the soil looks dry.
- Clean the glass and remove yellow or decaying leaves regularly.
- Observe regularly and be patient as it develops.
