Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) and Sony Semiconductor Solutions announced on Friday their plan to form a new joint venture in Japan focused on developing and manufacturing next-generation image sensors. The venture will combine Sony's sensor design expertise with TSMC's manufacturing and process technology strengths, deepening their long-standing partnership.
Joint Venture Structure and Operations
The joint venture will be majority-owned by Sony and will establish development and production lines at Sony's new fabrication plant in Koshi City, Kumamoto region. The companies have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding and are discussing potential investments, subject to a definitive agreement and customary closing conditions.
Investment and Government Support
Investments, along with new capital spending by Sony at its existing plant in Nagasaki, will be phased according to market demand, contingent on support from the Japanese government. The partnership will also explore opportunities in physical artificial intelligence applications, such as automotive and robotics.
Sony has previously indicated openness to external investment partners for its chip business, emphasizing the necessity of investing in manufacturing. Both companies already have a separate joint venture, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), established in 2021 and majority-owned by TSMC. JASM's first fab plant in Japan began volume production in late 2024.
