UIDAI Launches Free Email Update Service via Aadhaar App; 250K+ Use It in 2 Days
UIDAI Free Email Update via Aadhaar App Hits 250K+ Users

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a free email update service through the official Aadhaar mobile app, enabling users to update their registered email addresses without any charge. Within just two days of its launch, more than 250,000 people have already updated their email addresses via the app, highlighting strong public demand for the service.

How the Service Works

The new feature allows Aadhaar holders to update their email IDs directly from the mAadhaar app, eliminating the need to visit an Aadhaar enrollment centre or pay any fee. Users simply log in to the app, navigate to the email update option, enter their new email address, and authenticate using their Aadhaar-linked mobile number via OTP. The update is processed instantly, and a confirmation is sent to the new email.

According to UIDAI officials, the service is part of ongoing efforts to make Aadhaar management more convenient and accessible. “This initiative reduces the hassle of physical visits and paperwork, making it easier for citizens to keep their Aadhaar details current,” an official said.

Impact on Digital Services

An updated email address is crucial for Aadhaar holders to receive electronic communications from UIDAI, including Aadhaar updates, authentication alerts, and other important notifications. It also enables seamless integration with various government and private digital services that rely on Aadhaar-based authentication.

The rapid adoption—over a quarter million updates in 48 hours—indicates the pent-up demand for such a facility. Previously, email updates required a visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre and a nominal fee. The free digital alternative is expected to significantly boost the number of Aadhaar holders with valid email addresses, improving the reach of digital India initiatives.

Security and Verification

UIDAI has emphasized that the update process is secure. The email update is authenticated via OTP sent to the registered mobile number, ensuring that only the Aadhaar holder can make changes. The new email address is verified by sending a confirmation link. This multi-step verification helps prevent unauthorized modifications.

“Security is paramount. The OTP-based authentication ensures that email updates are genuine and authorized,” the official added. UIDAI also advises users to keep their mobile number updated with Aadhaar to avail of such facilities.

Future Plans

Encouraged by the initial response, UIDAI plans to introduce more self-service options on the mAadhaar app, including address update and document upload features. The authority aims to make Aadhaar management fully digital, reducing dependency on physical infrastructure.

The free email update service is available to all Aadhaar holders with a registered mobile number. Users can download or update the mAadhaar app from official app stores to access the feature.
