YouTube Premium Subscription Prices Increase in the US After Three Years
Google has announced a price increase for YouTube Premium subscriptions in the United States, marking the first adjustment in over three years. This move follows previous hikes in 2022 for the Family Plan and 2023 for the Individual Plan, reflecting ongoing trends in the streaming industry.
Details of the Price Revision
The latest revision raises monthly subscription fees by up to $4, with the new pricing already active for new subscribers. According to a report by 9to5Google, existing users are being notified via email, and the updated rates will take effect from the June 2026 billing cycle. Google has not issued a broad public announcement, opting instead for direct communication with subscribers.
In emails seen by 9to5Google, the company stated: “To continue delivering great service and features, we’re increasing your price to $15.99/month. We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this update will allow us to continue to improve Premium and support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube. You will see the change reflected on your June 7, 2026 billing date.”
Updated Pricing for YouTube Premium Plans
Under the revised pricing structure, the Individual plan now costs $15.99 per month, up from $13.99, representing a $2 increase. The Family plan has risen to $26.99 per month from $22.99, a $4 hike. Additionally, the Lite plan, introduced about a year ago, is now priced at $8.99 per month, up from $7.99, a $1 increase.
- Individual Plan: Old Price - $13.99/month, New Price - $15.99/month, Increase - $2.00
- Family Plan: Old Price - $22.99/month, New Price - $26.99/month, Increase - $4.00
- Lite Plan: Old Price - $7.99/month, New Price - $8.99/month, Increase - $1.00
While some users may still see older pricing in their accounts, notifications about the hike are being rolled out gradually. This increase aligns with similar pricing adjustments across streaming services, such as Netflix, which recently raised its subscription cost by $2.
Options for Subscribers
Subscribers who do not wish to continue with the higher rates can cancel or pause their membership for up to six months via YouTube Memberships. For individual users, an annual payment option is available at $159.99, which brings the effective monthly cost down to just over $13, offering a potential savings opportunity.
This price revision underscores Google's efforts to enhance YouTube Premium features and support content creators, amidst a competitive streaming landscape. Users are advised to check their email notifications and account settings for updates on the new pricing.
