Gorakhpur: Faculty members from the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Gorakhpur represented the institute at the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) 2026 Conference, held in Sofia, Bulgaria, on May 25. The team conducted a scientific workshop titled 'Artificial Intelligence Assisted Age Estimation and Injury Interpretation: AI Tools Revolutionizing and Transforming Medicolegal Examination', focusing on the growing role of artificial intelligence in forensic age estimation, injury interpretation, medico-legal documentation, and forensic decision-making.
Workshop Leadership and Participation
The workshop was chaired by Nilesh Tumram, Professor and Head of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at Government Medical College, Nandurbar, Maharashtra. Manoj B Parchake, Additional Professor and Head of the Department at AIIMS Gorakhpur, served as co-chairman and presenter, while Navneet Ateriya, Associate Professor, also participated as a presenter. More than 25 international delegates attended the session, which featured renowned forensic experts including Michael Thali and Victor W Weedn. Participants hailed from Australia, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, China, Brazil, and Switzerland.
Workshop Content and Demonstrations
The workshop included hands-on demonstrations on AI-assisted dental and skeletal age estimation, injury pattern analysis, and medico-legal documentation. In addition, discussions were held on the ethics, reliability, and limitations of AI in forensic practice. The event highlighted the transformative potential of AI tools in forensic science, offering practical insights into their application for age estimation and injury interpretation.
