Faridabad: A 32-year-old lineman was electrocuted while working on a power line in Jajru village. The family members of Sonu, a former district-level kabaddi player, have alleged foul play after he died while replacing a transformer on the 11 kV power line on Monday.
Family Alleges Harassment
“Our son was deliberately targeted and was harassed for some time,” the family alleged. Sector 58 SHO Vinod said that a case was registered based on a complaint lodged by them. The FIR was registered against four people — including the foreman, junior engineer, SDO and executive engineer of the power department — under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 3(5) (act done in furtherance of the common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
Background of the Victim
Sonu, a resident of Janoli village in Palwal, had been working with the electricity department under the Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam scheme for approximately six years. He was currently posted in the electricity board division in Sector 58. Police said Sonu is survived by his wife, an eight-year-old son, a younger daughter, and his parents, with whom he lived.
Incident Details
Family members reported that he reported for duty around 4pm on Monday and went to the village along with a colleague to replace a transformer. They added that the team obtained an official permit to shut down the power supply before commencing work. However, while Sonu was cutting the power line, “someone suddenly restored the electricity,” causing him to come into contact with the live current, leading to his death on the spot. His body was sent to the hospital for an autopsy.
Questions Raised
The family has questioned how the power supply could be restored despite a valid permit. They also alleged that no official from the department visited the spot after the incident. Police are investigating the matter further.
