Jeff Bezos Rejects AI Job Doom, Says Tech Will Create Labor Shortage
Bezos Rejects AI Job Doom, Predicts Labor Shortage

Jeff Bezos has fired back at those predicting widespread job destruction from artificial intelligence. The Amazon founder argued that AI will usher in a new era of civilisational wealth and human productivity. Bezos also spoke about his $41 billion AI venture, Prometheus, dismissing dark economic forecasts dominating Silicon Valley.

"The people who are jumping to the conclusion that the jobs are all going to go away... I think these people are just wrong," Bezos told the Financial Times. He added, "At root, all civilisational wealth is driven by invention. Six thousand years ago, somebody invented the plough, and we all got wealthier."

Instead of an employment apocalypse, Bezos believes AI will create a labor shortage by spurring advanced new jobs that outnumber those eliminated. His optimism contrasts with other AI leaders like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who warned that AI could rapidly eliminate a large part of the global workforce. Amodei proposed raising capital gains taxes to fund universal basic income.

Prometheus: Building the 'Artificial General Engineer'

Prometheus, launched in November by Bezos and former Google executive Vikram Bajaj, aims for a breakthrough: building an "artificial general engineer." Unlike popular AI products relying on large language models, Prometheus trains on real-world data to understand physical laws. The goal is to transform manufacturing by shortening design pipelines and eliminating costly physical prototyping. To feed the system, Bezos and Bajaj are raising up to $100 billion for a holding company to acquire stakes in traditional engineering firms.

Bezos's vision stands in stark contrast to the bearish outlook of other tech leaders, highlighting a deep divide in Silicon Valley over AI's impact on employment.
