The spotlight around Travis Kelce has rarely been brighter, and this offseason, the attention has stretched far beyond football. As the Kansas City Chiefs tight end prepares for what could be another defining NFL season, conversations about his relationship with Taylor Swift continue to dominate headlines. This time, though, the criticism is coming from inside football circles.
Former NFL star Cris Carter recently shared concerns about Kelce’s lifestyle and long-term focus, raising questions about whether the veteran tight end is struggling to balance football with the nonstop pace surrounding Swift’s global fame. The comments quickly sparked debate online, especially with Kelce entering his age-36 season and facing growing scrutiny about his conditioning and production.
Cris Carter questions Travis Kelce’s pace off the field
Speaking on the Fully Loaded Podcast, Carter openly wondered whether Kelce is trying too hard to match Swift’s demanding lifestyle instead of slowing down during the later stage of his career.
“I still think he’s trying to keep up with his wife, dude. Because he retires like it, sitting at home. And she’s not retired. She’s gone. She’s moving,” Carter said. “So, I think it’s better for him to keep getting this last year. It’s a hard one to keep up with. And $12 million to $15 million, just in case it doesn’t work out with her. You might need that.”
The remarks added another layer to the ongoing discussion surrounding Kelce’s offseason. Since getting engaged to Swift in August 2025, the Chiefs star has spent much of his downtime traveling publicly with the pop icon, appearing at major events and attracting constant social media attention.
Carter was not alone in questioning Kelce’s preparation either. Former ESPN analyst Todd McShay made similar comments last year while discussing Kelce’s fitness.
“Every show I watch, every pregame show, halftime show, postgame show, weekday show, every broadcast I watch for the last few weeks, it’s like, are we not allowed to say that he’s out of shape?” McShay said. “He’s been partying all offseason. He’s been jet-setting around with the most famous person, probably in the entire world. That he’s drinking, going to the US Open, he’s got cocktails in it.”
Travis Kelce’s Chiefs role may evolve in 2026
Despite the criticism, Carter still expects Kelce to remain productive in Kansas City’s offense. The Hall of Famer predicted another solid statistical season while also warning that the arrival of Kenneth Walker III could shift how the Chiefs operate offensively.
“I still think between 70 and 85 catches,” Carter added. “I think he’s still going to be close to a thousand yards. You want to be really effective in the red zone, especially as you get older, you get so much smarter, the body starts slowing down, but the ability to play with Patrick coming back. They got a big-time running back now.”
Kelce finished the 2025 regular season with 76 receptions for 851 yards, numbers that remained strong by most standards but still triggered conversation about whether his peak years are fading. Kansas City’s likely shift toward a more balanced offense with Walker could reduce Kelce’s overall targets while increasing his efficiency in key moments.
Still, people close to Kelce insist his preparation has not slipped. His mother, Donna Kelce, recently explained that the veteran tight end has already begun his demanding offseason routine ahead of organized team activities.
With training camp approaching, Kelce now enters another season carrying expectations both on and off the field. And fairly or unfairly, every part of his personal life continues to shape the conversation around his football future.
