Google Android Show 2026: Gemini, Smart Glasses, and More

Google hosted its Android Show: I/O Edition 2026 ahead of the annual Google I/O developer conference on May 19, offering users and developers an early look at upcoming Android features. In its official blog post, Google emphasized that Android remains a platform where innovation happens first, focusing on bringing new technologies to billions through its open ecosystem and partner network. The company highlighted the growing role of Gemini AI, stating that Android is evolving into an intelligence system that better understands user intentions and takes actions on their behalf.

Gemini Intelligence: A Smarter, More Proactive Android

Google introduced Gemini Intelligence on Android, integrating premium hardware and innovative software to help users stay ahead. Features roll out in phases starting with Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, expanding to other Android devices like watches, cars, glasses, and laptops later this year. Gemini Intelligence automates tedious tasks, such as creating a shopping cart from a grocery list or finding a tour based on a photo. The new Create My Widget feature lets users build custom widgets using natural language, like a meal prep dashboard or a weather widget showing wind speed and rain. The design language is updated with Material 3 Expressive, focusing on functional animations to reduce distractions.

Gemini in Chrome

Gemini in Chrome handles mundane tasks like booking appointments or reserving parking spots. It uses Personal Intelligence to auto-fill text fields across apps. Users can create personalized visuals or customize web images, such as turning a page into an infographic or furnishing a room. Security protections include defenses against prompt injection, and auto browse asks for confirmation before sensitive actions like purchases or social media posts.

Googlebook Laptops Announced

Google unveiled Googlebook laptops, built with Gemini at their core. The Magic Pointer feature brings Gemini assistance to the cursor, and Create Your Widget allows custom widgets via prompts. Googlebooks are optimized for Android, enabling faster innovation and better multi-device experiences.

Next-Generation Android Auto

Android Auto receives a full refresh with Material 3 Expressive design, widgets for glanceable info, and edge-to-edge Google Maps. Immersive Navigation is the biggest Maps update in over a decade, offering 3D views with buildings, lanes, and traffic lights. Support for 60fps full HD comes to cars from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. Gemini is now widely available in Android Auto, with Gemini Intelligence integration later this year.

Easier Sharing and Switching

The iOS-to-Android transfer process is overhauled, moving passwords, photos, messages, contacts, and homescreen layouts wirelessly, including eSIM transfer. It launches first on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this year.

Pause Point Feature

Pause Point gives users a 10-second breather to reflect on app usage, offering breathing exercises, timers, favorite photos, or alternative app suggestions like audiobooks to reduce mindless scrolling.

New 3D Emoji: Noto 3D

Google introduced Noto 3D emoji, adding physicality to digital expressions. They will be available across Google, starting with Pixel phones later this year.

Security and Privacy on Gemini Intelligence

Gemini Intelligence follows three core principles:

  • Explicit User Control: Granular controls for AI features, opt-in connections, security guardrails requiring user initiation, and explicit intent for data sharing.
  • Comprehensive Data Protection: Technologies like Private Compute Core and Private AI Compute safeguard data, with proven architecture from existing Google products and advanced defenses against prompt injection.
  • Operational Transparency: Real-time visibility when Gemini automates apps, AI assistant activity history in Privacy Dashboard, and auditable open-source code.

Creative Updates: Instagram Integration

Google partnered with Meta to bring Ultra HDR capture, video stabilization, and Night Sight to Instagram on Android. Screen Reactions lets users record themselves and their screens simultaneously. New tools in Instagram's Edits app, exclusively on Android, include Smart Enhance for one-tap upscaling and Sound Separation to isolate audio tracks.
