In a significant political maneuver, Shiv Sena (UBT) has revived its 'Operation Tiger' strategy in Maharashtra. On Tuesday, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC filed nomination for the Deputy Chairperson election of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, directly challenging the ruling Shinde Sena faction.
What is Operation Tiger?
Operation Tiger refers to the strategy of fielding candidates from within the ruling party or alliance to contest key positions, aiming to destabilize the government or create internal dissent. The term gained prominence during earlier political battles in Maharashtra.
Details of the Nomination
The nomination was filed by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sachin Ahir, who is a known loyalist of Uddhav Thackeray. The election for the Deputy Chairperson post is scheduled for July 5. Political observers note that this move could trigger a chain reaction, with other MLCs potentially following suit.
According to sources, the UBT faction has been planning this for weeks, aiming to expose divisions within the Shinde Sena camp. “This is just the beginning. Operation Tiger will roar again,” said a senior UBT leader on condition of anonymity.
Political Implications
The Shinde Sena currently holds a majority in the Council, but the UBT move could test the loyalty of some MLCs. If the nomination garners unexpected support, it could embarrass the ruling coalition. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies, including Congress and NCP, have extended support to the UBT candidate.
Political analysts believe this is a calculated risk by UBT to keep the pressure on Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. “It’s a symbolic challenge, but if it succeeds, it could change the dynamics,” said political analyst Abhay Deshpande.
Reactions from Shinde Sena
The Shinde Sena dismissed the move as a publicity stunt. “This is a desperate attempt by a frustrated faction. Our numbers are solid,” said Shinde Sena spokesperson. However, internal sources indicate that the party is taking the challenge seriously and has initiated whips to ensure no cross-voting.
The election will be closely watched as a test of strength between the two Shiv Sena factions. With the MVA backing UBT, the contest could become a proxy battle for the larger political alignment in Maharashtra.
