HP ProBook 4 G2i Review: A Value-for-Money AI Business Laptop
HP ProBook 4 G2i Review: Value-for-Money AI Business Laptop

The HP ProBook lineup has long been known as a budget-friendly, commercial-grade series for professionals and remote workers. Borrowing features from HP's premium EliteBook series, these laptops offer durability, robust security, and reliable performance without the high-end price tag. HP designs ProBooks around four pillars: longer battery life, durable design, performance, and security. The company offers a wide range of ProBook models to meet specific user needs.

Recently, the HP ProBook 4 G2i 14-inch entered The Times of India office for review. Priced starting at Rs 1,35,000, this laptop does not try to be the most exciting thing in the room. It features a subtle yet statement-making design, is relatively thicker than some models but lightweight, and handles everyday work tasks reliably. After spending time with the device, we believe it may be one of the most value-for-money machines on the market. Here is our review.

Design and Build: Professional, Not Dull

The ProBook 4 G2i makes a reasonable first impression with aluminium accents that give it a more premium feel and an overall solid build suitable for daily carry in a bag. It does not compete with razor-thin consumer ultrabooks; instead, its proportions are sensible: a 14-inch form factor that sits comfortably on a desk or in a bag without demanding attention. HP has focused on practical details: sensible port placement, a spill-resistant keyboard that handles occasional water incidents, and a chassis designed for regular use rather than careful handling. The spacious keyboard layout provides comfortable full-day typing without fatigue, even after long typing sessions. Overall, the design is refined and unfussy.

Display: Gets the Job Done

The 14-inch display comes in multiple configurations. Our unit features a standard WUXGA (1920 x 1200) LCD touch panel with 300 nits brightness. The display delivers clear visuals with adequate brightness for typical indoor use. An optional OLED panel is available for those seeking a more refined visual experience. The touchscreen adds flexibility for workflows where direct interaction is useful. Colour accuracy is solid across configurations, though not at the level of a dedicated creative workstation. However, the display quality is more than adequate for business users.

Closely related are the audio and camera. The machine is built for meeting-heavy workdays. The dual studio-quality speakers are noticeably better than typical budget business laptops, though they lack deep bass. Speaker volume is adequate, and output is clear and balanced for calls and video content. The dual studio microphones with AI noise reduction filter background interference reliably, which matters for calls from home or noisy environments.

The camera showcases AI integration in everyday use. AI Presence Detection adjusts camera behaviour based on whether you are in front of it. Auto-framing keeps you centred as you move. This feature is convenient during long calls when you need to stretch. The 5MP IR camera with dynamic lighting adjustment produces acceptable results in varied lighting conditions, outperforming standard webcams in this class.

Performance: Where the AI Story Gets Interesting

The HP ProBook 4 G2i earns attention for its AI-optimised performance across different settings. While multiple configurations are available, our unit is powered by an AMD Ryzen AI 7 450 processor clocked at 2GHz, paired with 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD. This is one of the top-tier models.

The processor handles day-to-day tasks effortlessly, including multiple browser tabs, document editing, video calls, and cloud applications running simultaneously. Thermal management is sensible; the machine stays quiet and cool under moderate load. With a good graphics card, the CPU can deliver excellent graphical performance, supporting smooth gameplay in e-sports titles at 1080p on medium settings. It supports AV1 hardware encoding and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, enabling 4K video playback and mild video editing.

Regarding AI and Copilot+ capabilities, the ProBook 4 G2i features a dedicated NPU capable of up to 50 TOPS, enabling on-device AI processing instead of cloud reliance. This matters for tasks like transcription, AI-assisted content generation via Microsoft Copilot, and intelligent noise reduction during calls. The laptop can handle demanding multitasking workloads beyond basic productivity.

Battery Life and Charging

The AMD processor is designed for premium thin-and-light laptops, offering excellent battery life while handling heavy multitasking and moderate content creation. Battery life is one of the ProBook 4 G2i's most reliable aspects. HP's battery covers a full working day under typical mixed usage, including document work, video calls, and web browsing, without requiring a mid-afternoon charge. When replenishing is needed, HP Fast Charge brings the battery to 50% in approximately 30 minutes. The charger is compact, with a single brick and a Type-C port.

Security: HP Wolf Security

Beyond pre-bundled Windows features, HP includes its own AI and security options. Security on the ProBook 4 G2i is handled through HP Wolf Security for Business, which operates at the hardware level with BIOS-level safeguards, TPM 2.0, and AI-enhanced threat detection that works continuously. This makes the machine more resilient against sophisticated attacks.

A fingerprint sensor provides fast, secure login without password friction. The Onlooker Detection feature uses the IR camera to detect if someone is peeking at your screen and quickly blurs it. While effective in theory, in practice it can be frustrating in environments like a newsroom where colleagues frequently look at your screen. The blurred screen can then become problematic.

Verdict

At a starting price of Rs 1,35,000, the HP ProBook 4 G2i 14-inch is a well-considered business laptop that takes AI and security seriously in ways that translate into real daily benefits rather than marketing copy. The on-device NPU delivers genuine performance headroom for AI-assisted workflows. The security architecture is thorough. Battery life is reliable.

The HP ProBook 4 G2i 14-inch is the kind of laptop that excites with its hybrid professional functionality and dependable, secure, AI-capable performance. It positions itself as HP's answer to a specific gap: the worker who needs genuine AI-enhanced performance, solid security, and all-day reliability.
