ICAI Plans Major Curriculum Overhaul with AI, Data Analytics, ESG

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is planning significant changes to its curriculum, which will require students to study subjects related to artificial intelligence, data analytics, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria, and sustainability. This move aims to align the chartered accountancy (CA) program with the rapidly evolving demands of the profession.

New Committee to Review Curriculum

ICAI has established a new Committee for Review of Education and Training (CRET) to thoroughly examine the existing CA syllabus, training structure, soft skills development, and examination system. The committee is expected to finalize its recommendations by December, after which the proposals will be opened for public feedback.

Technology Central to Accounting

ICAI President Prasanna Kumar D emphasized that the changes are necessary because the accounting profession is undergoing rapid transformation, with technology becoming central to both employment and practice. He stated, "We have formed the CRET. It is working to review the entire curriculum, including what syllabus and subjects need to be changed and training (articleship)."

Currently, subjects such as AI, data analytics, ESG, and sustainability are not formally part of the CA curriculum. However, ICAI now believes that future chartered accountants will require these skills to remain relevant. Kumar remarked, "For an engineer, AI is a separate subject, but for us, AI is not a subject; without AI, no chartered accountant can survive. Be it in employment or in practice, AI is a must."

Shift Towards Technology-Driven Learning

For students, the proposed changes signify a shift away from a curriculum focused predominantly on traditional accounting and auditing. The revised syllabus is expected to incorporate more technology-driven learning and practical industry requirements, as companies increasingly rely on automation, digital systems, and non-financial reporting.

The review committee will also examine articleship training, communication skills, and the assessment system. This implies that future CA students may see changes not only in subjects but also in the way training and examinations are conducted.

Growing Demand for Specialized Skills

In recent years, the accountancy sector has witnessed a growing demand for professionals with expertise in forensic auditing, ESG disclosures, and digital financial systems. ICAI stated that the curriculum review is aimed at preparing students for these evolving requirements.

The institute had earlier introduced the New Scheme of Education and Training in 2023. The latest review is expected to build further on those reforms. According to Kumar, the updated curriculum is likely to be implemented from 2028.
