ISRO to Include Civilian Astronauts in Future Gaganyaan Missions
ISRO to Send Civilian Astronauts on Gaganyaan

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced plans to include civilian astronauts in future Gaganyaan missions, marking a significant expansion of India's human spaceflight program. This move will allow non-ISRO personnel, such as scientists, engineers, doctors, and even private citizens, to travel to space.

Expanding the Astronaut Pool

According to ISRO chairman S. Somanath, the selection process for civilian astronauts will begin soon, with the first such missions expected by 2026. The decision aims to broaden participation in space exploration and leverage expertise from various fields.

Selection Criteria and Training

Civilian astronauts will undergo rigorous training at ISRO's Human Spaceflight Centre in Bengaluru. The training will include physical fitness tests, simulated space conditions, and emergency procedures. Candidates must have a background in science, technology, engineering, or medicine.

Mission Objectives

The primary goal is to conduct scientific experiments in microgravity. Civilian astronauts will also perform outreach activities to inspire the next generation. The missions will last up to seven days in low Earth orbit.

Gaganyaan Program Overview

Gaganyaan is India's first crewed space mission, aiming to send three astronauts to an orbit of 400 km for three days. The program includes two uncrewed test flights before the crewed mission. ISRO has already developed the crew module and launch abort system.

This initiative aligns with India's growing ambitions in space exploration. It also opens the door for international collaboration and commercial spaceflight opportunities. The inclusion of civilian astronauts is expected to boost public interest and investment in space research.
