Karnataka Cabinet Greenlights Major AI-Biotech Initiative and Museum Project

The Karnataka state cabinet, in its meeting on Thursday, has given its official approval for the establishment of a cutting-edge Centre of Excellence dedicated to Artificial Intelligence in the field of Biotechnology. This significant initiative will be strategically located at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) situated in the technological hub of Electronics City, Bengaluru.

Substantial Investment and Strategic Partnership

The ambitious project has been allocated a substantial outlay of Rs 20 crore, which will be distributed and utilized over a four-year implementation period. A key aspect of this venture is the formal partnership with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP), a renowned research organization. This collaboration aims to synergize expertise and resources to drive innovation at the intersection of AI and biotechnology.

"Karnataka has consistently been at the forefront of technological innovation," stated IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge, emphasizing the state's commitment to maintaining its leadership in the tech sector. This new centre is seen as a concrete step to bolster research, development, and application of AI technologies specifically within the life sciences and biotech industries.

Additional Cabinet Approvals: Technology Museum Stake Transfer

In a parallel decision, the state cabinet also approved the transfer of a 51% majority stake in the Karnataka Technology & Innovation Museum Foundation. This stake will be transferred to the Unboxing BLR Foundation, marking a significant shift in the governance and operational model for the planned museum project.

The envisioned Technology & Innovation Museum is slated to be constructed at the NGEF site in Baiyappanahalli, Bengaluru. The project will be developed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, leveraging private sector efficiency and investment alongside public oversight and support. This museum is expected to serve as an interactive hub showcasing technological advancements and fostering innovation culture within the state.

These cabinet decisions collectively underscore Karnataka's proactive strategy to reinforce its position as a global technology and innovation leader, with focused investments in emerging fields like AI-biotech convergence and public infrastructure for science and technology education.
