The reorganisation is designed to prioritise the development of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) agents, positioning the platform to better compete with a new generation of AI-powered coding assistants that are gaining popularity among developers worldwide.
The Drive Behind the GitHub Restructuring
According to reports, this internal restructuring is a direct response to the growing competitive pressure from innovative AI-based coding environments. Startups like Cursor and Anthropic’s Claude Code have entered the market, offering compelling alternatives for developers seeking AI-driven tools. Microsoft, which acquired GitHub for $7.5 billion in 2018, is now reallocating its workforce and resources to embrace the shift towards generative AI and automated coding.
The goal is to transform GitHub from its traditional role as a code repository into a central hub for AI-powered software development. Jay Parikh, a former lead engineer at Facebook who now heads Microsoft's CoreAI Platform and Tools group, is spearheading this vision. In an internal meeting last year, Parikh emphasised the urgent need for GitHub to evolve, stating that developers are no longer using the platform just to store code.
Building an "Agent Factory" and Enhancing Core Features
The recent changes involve moving a small group of Microsoft engineers to GitHub. This integration aims to foster better coordination and accelerate the development of AI agents that can rival tools like GitHub Copilot. Parikh's ambitious plan includes creating an "agent factory" and making GitHub's AI tools accessible across various developer environments, not confined to a single application. The company envisions GitHub becoming a comprehensive dashboard for managing multiple AI agents.
This overhaul is also part of a renewed investment in GitHub's foundational features. Key improvements highlighted by Parikh include:
- Enhancing GitHub Actions, the automation tool for building, testing, and deploying code.
- Developing advanced analytics and insights tools for teams to monitor code performance.
- Strengthening security features to safeguard code.
- Ensuring compliance with local data storage regulations to facilitate GitHub's expansion into new countries.

The formation of the CoreAI Platform and Tools group in January 2025 marked the beginning of this consolidated effort, bringing together Microsoft's developer division, AI platform team, and GitHub. Although Microsoft and GitHub have maintained some operational separation, the company has been working over the past few months to better align areas like sales and engineering.
