OpenAI's ChatGPT and Codex Hit by Major Outage, Thousands of Users Affected
OpenAI's two most popular artificial intelligence platforms, ChatGPT and the coding assistant Codex, have experienced a widespread service disruption, leaving thousands of students, developers, and professionals stranded in the middle of their tasks. The outage has affected both web and mobile versions of the applications, creating significant inconvenience for users who rely on these tools for daily work and learning activities.
Extent of the Technical Disruption
According to Downdetector, a service that monitors website and application outages, the technical glitch has impacted more than 3000 users primarily in the United States and India. User complaints on the platform reveal that a substantial majority are experiencing difficulties accessing ChatGPT, with 82% of Indian users and 86% of American users reporting problems with the platform.
The outage was not limited to a single feature or service. Users reported failures across multiple components of OpenAI's ecosystem, including the main ChatGPT interface, the mobile application, and the Codex system that programmers use extensively for writing and debugging code. Interestingly, when members of the Times of India tech team attempted to access ChatGPT on the web during the outage, the platform responded normally, suggesting potential regional or user-specific variations in the disruption.
OpenAI's Response and Investigation
OpenAI's official status page confirmed the disruption shortly after user reports began to spike significantly. The company stated that the issue is currently "under investigation," though they have not yet provided a specific reason for the crash or a clear timeline for when services will return to normal operation.
"We're currently experiencing issues," the company announced on their status page. "Users are unable to load ChatGPT, Codex, and the API Platform. We are continuing to investigate the issue for the listed services."
Additionally, OpenAI noted that users may have encountered problems with ChatGPT Business, particularly after upgrades or when adding new seats to their accounts. The company acknowledged an ongoing issue that had persisted for approximately eight hours at the time of reporting, stating: "Users may encounter issues with ChatGPT Business after upgrade or adding new seats for up to an hour. We have applied mitigation measures and are monitoring the recovery process."
Context of Recent AI Platform Outages
This disruption to OpenAI's popular applications comes just days after Anthropic, another prominent artificial intelligence company, faced multiple outages within a three-day period. Anthropic's Claude platform and associated APIs were down last week, leaving thousands of users unable to access their AI services.
The consecutive outages across major AI platforms highlight the growing dependence on these technologies and the significant impact when they become unavailable. As artificial intelligence tools become increasingly integrated into educational, professional, and creative workflows, service reliability becomes a critical concern for users across various sectors.
The widespread nature of the OpenAI outage, affecting both consumer-facing tools like ChatGPT and developer-focused platforms like Codex, demonstrates how interconnected these services have become in the modern digital landscape. The incident serves as a reminder of the infrastructure challenges facing even the most advanced technology companies as they scale their services to meet growing global demand.
