OpenAI Launches GPT-5.1 with Instant & Thinking Modes for Smarter AI
OpenAI GPT-5.1 Launches with Major Math & Coding Gains

In a significant move that promises to redefine artificial intelligence interactions, OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5.1, its latest flagship model that introduces two groundbreaking intelligent modes. The announcement comes just three months after the debut of GPT-5, addressing previous user feedback while delivering substantial performance enhancements.

Two Modes for Different Needs

The new GPT-5.1 introduces two distinct operational modes designed to cater to different user requirements. The GPT-5.1 Thinking mode employs extended reasoning capabilities to tackle complex queries that demand deeper analysis, while the GPT-5.1 Instant mode powers most regular ChatGPT conversations with faster, more natural responses.

What makes this update particularly innovative is the model's ability to automatically assess the difficulty level of each question. The system now intelligently allocates more processing power to challenging problems while maintaining instant responses for simpler queries, creating a more efficient and responsive user experience.

Enhanced Personality and Performance

OpenAI has addressed previous criticism about GPT-5 feeling "colder" than earlier versions by introducing eight distinct personality modes. Users can now choose from Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, Nerdy, and Cynical tones to customize their interaction style.

The platform allows fine-tuning of parameters that control emoji usage and the warmth or sharpness of responses. Changes apply instantly across all chat sessions, providing consistent personality throughout conversations.

According to performance evaluations, GPT-5.1 demonstrates significant improvements in mathematical and coding capabilities. The model has shown exceptional performance in AIME 2025 assessments and Codeforces evaluations, marking a substantial leap forward in technical problem-solving abilities.

Rollout Schedule and Availability

Early access to GPT-5.1 begins this week for Pro, Plus, Go, and Business subscribers, with free users gaining access shortly after. Enterprise and Education plans will have a dedicated one-week preview period to test the new capabilities.

For users who prefer the previous version, older GPT-5 models will remain accessible via a dropdown menu for the next three months, ensuring a smooth transition. Both new models will be gradually integrated into the API later this week, with OpenAI prioritizing platform stability during the rollout.

Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, emphasized the user-centric approach behind this update: "Users wanted AI that's not just intelligent, but also enjoyable to talk to. GPT-5.1 successfully balances depth with personality, creating more engaging and meaningful conversations."

The Thinking model specifically addresses the need for clearer communication by simplifying complex ideas and stripping away unnecessary technical jargon, making advanced concepts more accessible to all users.
