Pune's New Balbharati Textbooks Introduce Inclusive, Activity-Based Learning
Pune's New Balbharati Textbooks Focus on Inclusive Learning

The new Balbharati textbooks for Standards II, III, IV, and VI in Pune bring a host of progressive changes. These include depictions of people of all complexions and abilities, gender equality, and the introduction of complex scientific concepts through stories based on daily life. Mathematics is now activity-based, while Marathi textbooks introduce dialects to foster awareness and sensitivity among students. English textbooks focus on phonetics to support pronunciation, and evaluations are designed to test learning outcomes rather than rote memory.

Key Features of the New Textbooks

The textbooks also incorporate age-appropriate lessons on good and bad touch, reassuring children that they are not responsible for harassment or abuse. Information on trusted adults and child helpline numbers is printed inside the covers of all textbooks. For the first time, textbooks for work experience, sports, and art education have been introduced.

Availability and Bridge Course

Anuradha Oak, director of Balbharati, announced at a press conference on Wednesday that textbooks for Standards II, III, and IV will be available for students by June 10. For Standard VI, textbooks will be available within 21 days of school reopening, after students complete a bridge course developed by SCERT.

Introduction of Dialects

Savita Wayal, Marathi language expert at Balbharati, said, "This year we are introducing Malvani in Standard VI for the first time in Marathi, along with the Varhadi dialect. Every year, till Standard XII, we will keep adding two dialects."

English Learning Approach

The approach to English learning emphasizes communication and self-expression rather than rote learning. Anagha Somwanshi, English language expert at Balbharati, explained, "The Standard VI textbooks include phonetics to support pronunciation and speaking skills. Students are encouraged to think critically and write creatively through activities such as book reviews, movie reviews, and news reports, instead of just reading the text and answering questions."

Helpline Numbers and Learning Outcomes

Helpline numbers, including those of Telemanas and Manodarpan, are printed on the back covers of all textbooks. Each textbook maps learning outcomes content for that subject. Oak mentioned that Balbharati is consulting with NGOs to explore the possibility of creating audio books for students with disabilities.

Science and Mathematics Innovations

Science teacher Sandeep noted, "Unlike previous years when topics were directly introduced in science, now there is a story, perhaps of a child and his father exploring something, and then the topic is introduced. Children are encouraged to think and deduce rather than directly being told what it is." Similarly, mathematics expert Balkrishna Mapari confirmed that the mathematics textbooks adopt an activity-based approach.

Open to Feedback

Oak stated that the public can bring up any omissions or misrepresentations so that corrections can be made the following year. Regarding maps, she said they carry a disclaimer stating they are for teaching purposes only, to avoid criticism over scale or technical issues.
