Steve Kerr has handled pressure-packed playoff interviews, championship celebrations, and difficult seasons across more than a decade with the Golden State Warriors. Yet one of his most unexpected coaching habits involved quietly slipping Taylor Swift lyrics into postgame press conferences while nobody noticed. What started as a private joke eventually reached Swift herself, leaving even the pop superstar surprised by how far Kerr had taken it.
The Revelation
The revelation surfaced during a recent ESPN feature, where Kerr admitted he spent months weaving lines from Swift's hit song All Too Well into his media sessions during the 2022-23 NBA season. One of the earliest examples came after a win over Houston in March 2023, when Kerr casually opened his remarks by saying, "I walked through the door of the locker room at halftime," echoing the opening line from the song. At the time, nobody in the room caught on.
A Season-Long Challenge
According to Kerr, the idea slowly turned into a season-long challenge. He kept finding ways to work more lyrics into interviews while maintaining a straight face, all without reporters or fans realizing what he was doing. Eventually, his son Matthew pieced the clips together into a single edited video and shared it inside the family group chat. The final result reportedly showed Kerr nearly reciting the entire song over the course of the season through scattered interview answers.
The prank became even more surreal when the video somehow found its way to Swift through a mutual friend. Kerr recalled the singer reacting with disbelief. "Wait, is this real?" Swift asked after watching the compilation. Later, she reportedly followed up with another request: "Can I put it on social media?" Kerr declined, saying Swift described the joke as "creative and funny," but the full video has still not been released publicly.
The story offered a lighter glimpse into a coach often associated with intensity and championship expectations. Still, Kerr's week was not only about hidden song lyrics and viral stories.
Steve Kerr Addresses Return to the Warriors
Kerr also spoke openly about his decision to return as Warriors head coach after signing a two-year extension. The 60-year-old admitted he seriously considered retirement before ultimately deciding he could not walk away from the organization. "My wife said, 'You might coach again someday, but you'll never coach the Warriors again,'" Kerr explained. "And that was really meaningful because I love this team, I love our players and that struck me."
After Golden State finished 37-45 and missed the playoffs, Kerr acknowledged he must improve next season. "I know I have to be better. I didn't have a great coaching year," he admitted. The veteran coach pointed toward turnovers, discipline, and the need for younger players as priorities moving forward. "We need some younger legs, for sure," Kerr said, as the Warriors prepare for another important offseason around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
