Thinking Machines Lab Faces Major Talent Drain as Founders Join Meta
Thinking Machines Lab, the prominent artificial intelligence startup headed by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, has experienced another significant setback with the departure of two more founding members to Meta. This development intensifies concerns about a growing talent drain at the company, which has been aggressively targeted by larger tech rivals in the competitive AI landscape.
Key Departures to Meta
According to reports, Christian Gibson and Noah Shpak, both listed as part of the founding team on earlier versions of the company's website, have already commenced their roles at Meta. Christian Gibson is a former OpenAI engineer who played a crucial role in building the initial ChatGPT model and specializes in supercomputers for AI training. Noah Shpak is an AI engineer with previous experience at Character.AI and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Recent Exodus of Talent
The exits of Gibson and Shpak follow a series of high-profile departures from Thinking Machines Lab. These include cofounder Andrew Tulloch, who also joined Meta, along with former CTO Barret Zoph and cofounder Luke Metz, who returned to OpenAI. Additionally, several researchers and founding member Jolene Parish, who specialized in security, have left the company.
Last month, Barret Zoph's departure was confirmed by Mira Murati in a post on the microblogging platform X. Murati stated, "We have parted ways with Barret Zoph," and announced that Soumith Chintala would assume the role of new CTO. She praised Chintala as "a brilliant and seasoned leader who has made important contributions to the AI field for over a decade" and expressed excitement about his new responsibilities.
A Startup Under Pressure
Based in San Francisco, Thinking Machines Lab raised $2 billion at a valuation of $12 billion last year, positioning itself as a significant player in custom AI model development. However, the company has faced aggressive poaching from larger competitors like Meta and OpenAI, both of which are fiercely competing for top AI talent.
Despite the talent exodus, Thinking Machines Lab has also attracted notable hires, including Neal Wu, a decorated Olympiad programmer, and Soumith Chintala, the creator of PyTorch, who now serves as its chief technology officer.

The departures highlight the intense competition among AI companies for elite engineers and researchers. Meta has been actively expanding its AI research teams, while OpenAI continues to lure talent with its frontier model projects.
