YouTube Rolls Out Prominent AI Content Disclosure Labels

YouTube is rolling out more visible and simplified disclosure labels for AI-generated or altered content as part of its efforts to increase transparency. The update shifts these disclaimers directly into the spotlight, placing them right under the video player for long-form clips and as a visual overlay on Shorts. The change marks a pivot from YouTube's previous strategy, moving away from hiding disclosures in descriptions to ensuring that viewers get the context they need at a single glance.

Where the new AI labels will appear

Based on user feedback, YouTube has created a single, standardized label format for all realistic or significantly altered AI content. For long-form videos, the AI disclosure label will now appear prominently directly below the video player, sitting right above the video description. For Shorts, the label will appear as a permanent visual overlay on top of the video itself. For videos that are clearly unrealistic, animated, or only slightly edited using digital tools, YouTube will keep the disclosures inside the expanded description box.

YouTube introduces automatic AI detection

While YouTube still requires creators to manually check a box during the video upload process to disclose realistic AI usage, the platform is introducing automated guardrails. Starting in May 2026, YouTube is rolling out internal detection signals to automatically identify AI-generated media. If a creator fails to declare their AI usage but YouTube's internal systems detect significant, photorealistic AI elements, the platform will automatically apply the disclosure label to the video.

However, YouTube has emphasized that creators will remain in control if the system makes an automated mistake. In case a video is incorrectly flagged by the AI technology, creators can easily dispute the tag and update their status within YouTube Studio.

YouTube notes that the AI disclosure label will remain completely permanent and unremovable in a handful of specific cases, including content created using YouTube's native AI creative tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, as well as files containing embedded C2PA metadata which proves the footage was fully generated by AI.

For digital creators worried about how these tags might affect their reach, YouTube confirmed that a disclosure label alone will not impact how a video is recommended by the algorithm, nor will it affect the video's eligibility to earn ad revenue.
