Ahmedabad Microbiologist Defrauded of Rs 2.3 Lakh in Sophisticated Credit Card Scam
In a distressing incident of cybercrime, a 31-year-old microbiologist employed with a pharmaceutical company in Ahmedabad has been allegedly duped of Rs 2.3 lakh. The fraud was executed by criminals posing as bank officials who convinced the victim to increase the limit on his credit card under false pretenses.
Police Register Case and Launch Investigation
Krishnanagar police registered an official offence on Saturday and have initiated a thorough investigation into this cyberfraud case. According to the police report, the victim holds a credit card issued by a private bank, which became the target of the elaborate scam.
Detailed Timeline of the Fraudulent Activity
The sequence of events began on February 24 at 4:49 PM when the victim received a call from an unknown telephone number. The caller introduced himself as an employee of the bank and informed the microbiologist that he was eligible for an increase in the credit limit of his card. The victim, trusting the legitimacy of the call, accepted the offer.
The initial caller then informed him that another executive would contact him shortly to complete the necessary process. Within minutes, as promised, the victim received another call from a different mobile number. This second caller also claimed to be from the bank's credit card department, further reinforcing the illusion of authenticity.
The victim remained on this second call for approximately 10 minutes, during which the fraudster provided detailed instructions and assurances. The caller later informed him that the credit limit enhancement would be processed and activated within 24 to 48 hours, creating a false sense of security and completion.
The Financial Impact and Immediate Aftermath
Shortly after the call concluded, the victim received two SMS alerts on his mobile phone. These notifications indicated unauthorized transactions totaling Rs 2.3 lakh from his account. The realization that he had been defrauded prompted immediate action, leading to the police complaint and subsequent investigation.
This incident highlights the growing sophistication of financial scams targeting educated professionals in urban centers. The fraudsters employed psychological tactics, including creating urgency and mimicking legitimate banking procedures, to bypass the victim's caution.
