An Ahmedabad-based trader has become the latest victim of a sophisticated online scam, losing a significant sum of money in a fraudulent deal for green coconuts. The incident highlights the growing risks associated with digital commerce and the cunning tactics employed by cybercriminals.
The Lure of a Lucrative Deal
A resident of the Satellite area in Ahmedabad decided to venture into the business of trading green coconuts. To find a supplier, he turned to the internet and began searching online. Shortly after, he received a WhatsApp call from an individual who presented himself as a coconut trader from Aurangabad.
During their negotiations, the caller initially quoted a price of Rs 22 per coconut. After some discussion, he agreed to reduce the rate to Rs 19 per piece. Convinced by the offer, the Ahmedabad trader finalized an order worth Rs 1,90,000. The supposed supplier then requested an advance payment, promptly sending his bank account details over the same WhatsApp chat.
The Elusive Delivery and Mounting Pressure
Trusting the arrangement, the complainant transferred Rs 50,000 in two instalments via RTGS to the provided account. To further build confidence, the accused sent a video that allegedly showed green coconuts being loaded onto a truck. However, instead of arranging delivery, the caller began pressuring the trader to send more money.
As a tactic to delay and extract further funds, the fraudster sent a "tax invoice" via WhatsApp, assuring the victim that the goods would be delivered within the next 24 hours. Despite these assurances, the truckload of coconuts never arrived at its destination.
Realization and Police Action
When the trader contacted the caller for updates, he was met with a series of different excuses. The fraudster continued to insist on the payment of the full amount, raising the victim's suspicions. Recognizing the signs of a potential cyberfraud, the Satellite resident took a crucial step: he called the national cyber fraud helpline number "1930" to report the incident.
Following the advice from the helpline, the trader formally lodged a complaint with the Satellite police station on Friday. The police have registered a case and have begun an investigation into the matter, aiming to track down the individual operating under the false pretence of being an Aurangabad-based coconut supplier.
This case serves as a stark reminder for individuals and businesses engaging in online trade to exercise extreme caution. Verifying the credentials of unknown parties, avoiding large advance payments, and using secure, official platforms for transactions are essential steps to prevent falling prey to such scams.
