In Bengaluru, as students increasingly spend more time online, digital scams are rapidly emerging as a serious threat for young users across the city. From deceptive prize notifications and phishing links to UPI frauds and social media impersonation, cybercriminals are actively targeting the student demographic, exploiting their frequent digital engagement.
TOI's #DontGetScammed Initiative Comes to Campus
To tackle this escalating concern, The Times of India is launching its digital safety campaign, #DontGetScammed, directly onto campus grounds with an interactive awareness session tailored for students. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between digital access and digital responsibility, empowering young minds with crucial cyber-safety skills.
Expert-Led Discussion on Cyber Issues
The pivotal conversation on cyber threats will be spearheaded by Raja Kasim Imam P, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) from the Central Crime Bureau of Bengaluru city police. Scheduled for Monday, February 2, at 11:30 AM, the event will take place at APS PU College in NR Colony, Basavanagudi.
Following the main talk, the session will feature a fireside chat with a TOI journalist, providing deeper insights into media perspectives on cyber safety. An interactive Q&A segment will allow students to engage directly with experts, addressing their specific concerns and queries.
Decoding Digital Scams with Real-Life Cases
Drawing from extensive real-life cases and hands-on policing experience, the senior police officer will interact with PU students to demystify how digital scams operate. He will explain why young people often become easy targets for cybercriminals and outline simple, actionable steps to enhance online safety.
The comprehensive session will cover prevalent frauds associated with:
- Social media platforms
- Online gaming environments
- E-commerce and online shopping
- OTP sharing vulnerabilities
- Digital payment systems
These areas represent daily digital interactions for students, making the discussion highly relevant and practical.
Awareness as the First Line of Defence
As digital connectivity expands, so does the necessity for vigilant digital responsibility. This campus talk is a key component of TOI's broader effort to equip students with essential cyber-safety knowledge. In today's interconnected world, awareness serves as the primary defence against evolving online threats, fostering a safer digital ecosystem for all users.
