Bhagalpur Police Cracks Down on Interstate Cyber Fraud Gang
In a significant development against organized cybercrime, the cyber cell of Bhagalpur district police has successfully dismantled an interstate gang that was systematically defrauding citizens through sophisticated impersonation tactics. The criminals posed as intelligence and police officials to place their victims under what they termed as "digital arrest", creating a climate of fear and coercion to extract money.
Details of the Arrests and Seizures
Three individuals have been apprehended in connection with a fraudulent scheme amounting to approximately Rs 18 lakh. The primary victims were a married woman and her husband, who were falsely accused of money laundering and threatened with severe legal consequences if they did not comply with the demands of the accused.
The arrested suspects have been identified as:
- Avinash Kumar, aged 23, from Hassanpur Surat locality under Shahpur Patori police station in Samastipur district.
- Tarakant, aged 50, from Makandpur locality under Mahua police station in Vaishali district.
- Durganand Mishra, aged 45, from Lavrana Indrapuri locality under Patliputra police station in Patna district.
During the operation, law enforcement officials confiscated a substantial amount of evidence, including laptops, mobile phones, multiple ATM cards, cash, and various other equipment used in the execution of these cyber frauds. These items are now under forensic examination to uncover further details about the gang's operations.
Widespread Network and Ongoing Investigations
Police sources have revealed that the accused were integral components of a highly organized interstate network that extended its activities across numerous districts in Bihar and potentially other states as well. Authorities are actively probing their possible connections with international cyber fraud gangs, suggesting a broader, more complex criminal ecosystem.
Initial estimates indicate that the trio may have been involved in cyber frauds totaling around Rs 65 lakh over the past several months. Their modus operandi specifically targeted vulnerable individuals, with a notable focus on elderly citizens who are often less familiar with digital security measures.
Official Statement from Cyber Cell Authorities
Cyber cell DSP and in-charge of the cyber police station, Kanishk Srivastava, provided insights into the case. He stated, "The three arrested cybercriminals are part of an interstate cyber fraudsters' gang. We are thoroughly investigating their links with suspected international gangs of cybercriminals and fraudsters to ensure comprehensive justice and prevent future incidents."
This operation underscores the escalating challenges posed by cybercrime in the region and highlights the proactive measures being taken by local law enforcement to safeguard citizens from such deceptive practices. The Bhagalpur police's efforts serve as a critical reminder for the public to remain vigilant against unsolicited communications and fraudulent schemes in the digital age.
