CJI Surya Kant Expresses Dismay Over Educated Victims in Digital Arrest Scams

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday voiced profound surprise and concern that despite widespread public warnings, numerous educated individuals continue to be ensnared by sophisticated digital arrest scams, resulting in the loss of their entire life savings. The Supreme Court bench, comprising CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, heard this alarming update during a session addressing the escalating cybercrime menace.

Task Force Seeks Extended Timeline for Robust Anti-Scam Mechanism

Attorney General R Venkataramani informed the court that the inter-departmental task force, established to combat digital arrest cybercrimes, requires an additional three weeks to formulate a comprehensive and robust counter-mechanism. This extension is deemed necessary to ensure the development of an effective strategy in consultation with leading cyber experts.

High-Profile Case Highlights Severity of Digital Arrest Threats

In a stark illustration of the scam's severity, CJI Kant revealed he had recently received a complaint from a former senior official of Chandigarh, who was robbed of a staggering Rs 2.5 crore through a digital arrest scheme. Police investigations have led to the arrest of seven individuals implicated in this case.

The victims, a 70-year-old former chief architect of Chandigarh, was held under digital arrest from May 3 to May 30 last year, during which the perpetrators systematically siphoned off his funds. This incident underscores the targeted and prolonged nature of these cybercrimes, which often exploit fear and authority to manipulate victims.

Government Initiatives to Combat Digital Arrest Cybercrime

Attorney General Venkataramani assured the Supreme Court that the government is actively pushing the inter-departmental committee to expedite the creation of a robust anti-digital arrest framework. Key initiatives under consideration include:

  • Establishing a dedicated helpline number for lodging complaints related to digital arrest threats.
  • Enhancing coordination between law enforcement agencies and cyber experts to track and neutralize scam operations.
  • Implementing public awareness campaigns to educate citizens, especially vulnerable groups, about recognizing and avoiding such scams.

The urgency of these measures is amplified by the rising number of cases, where scamsters use technology to impersonate officials and coerce victims into transferring money under the guise of legal arrests. The Supreme Court's intervention highlights the critical need for swift governmental action to protect citizens from these devastating financial and emotional losses.
