Massive Cyber Fraud Factory Dismantled in Uttar Pradesh's Kheri
In a significant breakthrough against cybercrime, the Uttar Pradesh Police have successfully busted a cyber fraud factory operating in the Kheri district. The operation led to the arrest of 12 individuals and the seizure of approximately 1,500 SIM cards, which were being used to defraud innocent people across the country.
Details of the Operation
The police raid was conducted based on specific intelligence inputs regarding a fraudulent call center operating from a rented premises in Kheri. The accused were found to be involved in a large-scale phishing scam, where they would impersonate bank officials and trick victims into revealing sensitive financial information. The seized SIM cards were registered under fake identities, making it difficult for authorities to trace the culprits.
According to senior police officials, the fraudsters targeted individuals by offering fake loan approvals, lottery winnings, and investment opportunities. They used sophisticated methods to clone SIM cards and bypass security protocols. The arrested individuals include the mastermind, who is believed to have connections with other cybercriminal networks in the region.
The police have also recovered several laptops, mobile phones, and documents containing details of potential victims. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate. The authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious calls or messages to the cybercrime helpline.
Modus Operandi of the Fraudsters
The gang operated by first purchasing SIM cards in bulk using forged documents. They then used these SIM cards to make thousands of calls daily, often using voice-over-internet-protocol (VoIP) technology to hide their location. Victims were lured with promises of high returns on investments or immediate loan disbursements. Once the victims shared their bank details, the fraudsters would siphon off money through multiple bank accounts.
The police have highlighted that the use of 1,500 SIM cards indicates the scale of the operation, which may have defrauded hundreds of victims. The seized devices are being examined to gather more evidence and trace the flow of money.
Legal Action and Public Advisory
All 12 arrested individuals have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. They are currently in police custody and will be produced before a local court. The police have also issued a public advisory, warning people to never share personal or financial information over the phone and to verify the authenticity of any unsolicited offers.
This crackdown is part of a larger statewide campaign against cybercrime, which has seen a rise in such fraudulent activities in recent months. The Uttar Pradesh Police have set up special cybercrime units and are working closely with telecom operators to curb the misuse of SIM cards.
The successful operation in Kheri serves as a deterrent to other cybercriminals and underscores the commitment of law enforcement to protect citizens from digital fraud. The public is encouraged to stay informed and report any suspicious activity to the cybercrime portal or local police station.
