Retired SBI Chief Manager Defrauded of Rs97 Lakh in Patna Online Investment Scam
A retired State Bank of India chief manager, Amarendra Kumar Sinha, has filed a formal complaint with the Patna cyber police, alleging he was defrauded of a staggering Rs97 lakh in a sophisticated online investment scam. The incident highlights the growing risks of cyber fraud targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly retirees seeking investment opportunities.
How the Elaborate Scam Unfolded
The fraud began shortly after Sinha's retirement on August 31, 2024, when he became active on social media platforms while exploring investment options for his retirement funds. According to the detailed complaint filed with authorities, Sinha encountered an advertisement on social media that led him to connect with a woman identifying herself as Sakshi Agarwal.
This individual claimed to be the Chief Executive Officer of VV Construction, a company based in Mumbai. Over several weeks, the two developed what appeared to be a trusting relationship through extensive communication.
Key elements of their interaction included:- Exchange of WhatsApp contact information
- Sharing of Aadhaar card details
- Exchange of personal photographs
- Regular communication building confidence in the investment opportunity
The Financial Transactions and Sudden Disappearance
After establishing this rapport, Sinha began transferring funds through multiple transactions, ultimately sending a total of Rs97 lakh to the individual. The transactions occurred over a period of time, with Sinha believing he was making legitimate investments through what appeared to be a credible business connection.
The situation took a dramatic turn when, after the final transfer, the woman ceased all communication. Despite repeated attempts to contact her through previously established channels, Sinha received no response, leading him to realize he had fallen victim to an elaborate fraud scheme.
Police Response and Investigation Status
Cyber Deputy Superintendent of Police Nitish Chandra Dhariya confirmed that a formal case has been registered regarding this incident. "Sinha became active on social media post-retirement and was contacted by a woman identifying herself as Sakshi Agarwal, who claimed to be the CEO of VV Construction, Mumbai," DSP Dhariya stated.
The police official elaborated on the investigation process, noting, "We are collecting detailed information from Sinha regarding the fraudulent transactions and the nature of his interactions with the suspect. Our cyber crime unit is actively working on this case to trace the individuals involved and recover the stolen funds."
Important Warning from Cyber Police
DSP Dhariya issued a crucial warning to the public regarding online investment opportunities. "We urge all citizens to exercise extreme caution before transferring funds or sharing personal information online," he emphasized. "Verify the credentials of any individual or company offering investment opportunities through official channels before proceeding with financial transactions."
The police emphasized several precautionary measures:
- Always verify the legitimacy of companies through official government registries
- Avoid sharing sensitive personal documents like Aadhaar cards with unknown contacts
- Consult with financial advisors or family members before making significant investments
- Report suspicious online behavior to cyber police immediately
This case serves as a stark reminder of the sophisticated methods employed by cyber criminals targeting individuals seeking investment opportunities, particularly those who may be less familiar with digital security protocols. The Patna cyber police continue their investigation while warning citizens to remain vigilant against such elaborate online fraud schemes.
