IIT Kanpur's C3iHub Deploys Advanced SOC at Bhilai Steel Plant
IIT Kanpur's C3iHub Activates SOC at Bhilai Steel Plant

In a significant move to fortify India's industrial backbone against digital threats, a cutting-edge Security Operations Center (SOC) has become operational at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), a flagship unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). This crucial facility was deployed by the C3iHub, a technology innovation hub based at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.

Inauguration and Key Participants

The new SOC was formally inaugurated by Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, and Shri C.R. Mahapatra, Director In-Charge of SAIL's Bhilai Steel Plant. The event was attended by senior officials from both organizations, including Dr. Tanima Hajra, CEO of C3iHub, and Shri M.P. Singh, General Manager (IT) at BSP.

During the inauguration ceremony, attendees witnessed a live demonstration showcasing the SOC's comprehensive capabilities in security monitoring and management. Officials from Bhilai Steel Plant commended the project team for the seamless execution and operational readiness of the new center.

Why Cybersecurity is Critical for Modern Industry

Speaking at the event, Prof. Manindra Agrawal emphasized the growing importance of cybersecurity for industrial operations. He noted that modern steel plants rely heavily on interconnected systems like SCADA and IoT devices, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks that could disrupt production.

"The successful deployment of this SOC underscores a powerful collaboration between academia, technology hubs, and industry to safeguard our national critical infrastructure," Prof. Agrawal stated. He added that as Industry 4.0 technologies become more prevalent, cybersecurity forms the foundation of operational resilience.

Capabilities of the New Security Operations Center

The C3iHub-designed SOC is not just another IT security unit. It is a centralized and integrated platform built to enhance cyber resilience for both Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) environments. This dual focus is vital for industrial plants where physical machinery is controlled by digital systems.

The facility's core functions include:

  • Round-the-clock monitoring of enterprise and industrial networks.
  • Real-time detection
  • Rapid incident response to contain and neutralize security breaches.

This proactive security shield is expected to empower Bhilai Steel Plant to strengthen its cyber defenses, ensure uninterrupted operations, and protect critical assets from the evolving landscape of cyber threats. The project stands as a model for protecting other essential industrial facilities across the nation.
