Jeypore Police Crack Down on Modified Silencers and Loud Horns

In a decisive move to curb noise pollution and rash driving, the Jeypore town police in Koraput district have initiated a special drive against motorists violating noise control norms. The focus is particularly on motorcyclists using modified silencers and loud horns, aiming to restore peace on the streets and ensure compliance with the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

Drive Details and Penalties

As part of the enforcement, police detained at least 85 motorcycles within three days until Friday for using modified silencers that produced excessive noise and caused public disturbance. The owners were collectively fined over Rs 1 lakh. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Jeypore, Archita Mittal, stated that the modified silencers were removed and destroyed. Fines were imposed under the Motor Vehicle Rules before the motorcycles were returned to their owners, accompanied by warnings against repeating the offense. She added that raids against modified silencers will be intensified in the coming days.

Awareness and Broader Enforcement

Inspector in-charge of Jeypore town police station, Ullas Chandra Rout, emphasized that motorists are being educated about the harmful effects of excessive noise and the penalties for such violations. Police noted that many vehicles, including trucks and buses, continue to flout the Odisha Urban Police Act, which mandates that horn noise should not exceed 65 decibels, by using multi-toned and excessively loud horns. Authorities are also considering action against garages and workshops allegedly involved in illegally installing pressure horns and modifying silencers.

Public Response

Residents have welcomed the crackdown but stressed the need for regular enforcement. Local trader Naveen Jain remarked, "Action against honking should not be limited to a few days. It needs to be a continuous effort." The police drive underscores a commitment to reducing noise pollution and ensuring safer, quieter roads.
