In a distressing incident highlighting the growing sophistication of cybercrime, a 31-year-old software engineer residing in Warje Malwadi, Pune, was swindled out of a substantial sum of Rs 4.80 lakh through a meticulously planned credit card fraud scheme. The fraudulent activity, which occurred in January of this year, has now led to the filing of a formal complaint with the Warje Malwadi police station, with the victim lodging the complaint on Thursday.
How the Elaborate Scam Unfolded
According to detailed statements from an officer at the Warje Malwadi police station, the entire fraudulent episode began when the complainant received an unsolicited phone call from an unknown number. The caller, who deceptively identified himself as a representative from the victim's bank's credit card department, initiated the scam by informing the engineer that a purported "protection plan" linked to his credit card was nearing its expiration date.
When the software engineer clarified that he had never applied for or authorized any such protection plan, the fraudster cleverly countered by claiming that the bank had automatically activated this plan because the cardholder had previously declined several transactions. This fabricated narrative was designed to create a sense of urgency and legitimacy, preying on the victim's concern over unauthorized bank activities.
The Deceptive Trap and Financial Loss
The scammer then escalated the pressure by warning the victim that if he did not immediately cancel this non-existent plan, a charge of Rs 3,999 would be directly deducted from his bank account. To facilitate the supposed cancellation, the fraudster shared a malicious link with the complainant.
The victim, in an attempt to resolve the issue, entered the sensitive personal and financial details requested by the fraudulent link. Shortly after submitting this information, he received an alarming message from his bank notifying him of a massive transaction amounting to Rs 4.78 lakh, which had been executed using his compromised credit card details.
It was at this critical moment that the software engineer realized he had fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud operation. The immediate financial impact totaled Rs 4.80 lakh, prompting him to swiftly approach the local authorities to report the crime and seek justice.
