Pune Senior Loses Nearly Rs 9 Lakh in Sophisticated PNG Bill Scam

In a distressing incident highlighting the growing menace of cybercrime, a 62-year-old resident of Kothrud, Pune, was defrauded of a staggering Rs 8.91 lakh on November 13 last year. The elaborate scam involved cybercrooks posing as officials threatening to disconnect his piped natural gas (PNG) connection over an alleged unpaid bill.

How the Elaborate Cyber Fraud Unfolded

The victim, who operates an electrical gadgets manufacturing unit, received a call from an unknown mobile number. The caller aggressively informed him that he had not paid his PNG bill for the month of May and demanded immediate payment to avoid disconnection of his gas supply.

The fraudster then sent a link, instructing the senior citizen to pay a nominal amount of Rs 8 through it to initiate the payment process, the officer from Kothrud police explained. Trusting the caller, the victim downloaded the link and attempted to transfer the Rs 8. However, the transaction reportedly failed at that moment.

Discovery of the Massive Financial Loss

The true extent of the fraud came to light the following day, November 14, when the victim was in Mahabaleshwar. He tried to make a hotel payment using his debit card but found insufficient funds in his bank account. Upon checking with his accountant, he was shocked to learn that Rs 8.91 lakh had been siphoned from his account through five separate transactions on November 13 itself.

Realizing he had fallen prey to a sophisticated online scam, the distraught businessman immediately approached the authorities. After preliminary investigations, the Pune cybercrime police have registered a formal case with the Kothrud police station.

Authorities Take Action Amid Broader Security Concerns

This incident underscores the critical need for public vigilance against such phishing attempts, especially targeting senior citizens. The police are actively investigating the case to trace the cybercrooks behind this audacious fraud. Citizens are advised to verify any unsolicited payment demands directly with their service providers through official channels and to avoid clicking on suspicious links sent via call or message.

The case adds to the growing list of cyber frauds in urban areas, prompting law enforcement to enhance digital safety awareness campaigns.
