Pune Senior Citizen's Quick Thinking Thwarts Rs 12 Lakh Digital Arrest Scam
In a remarkable display of vigilance, an 81-year-old resident of Nigdi, Pune, successfully intervened to save his 35-year-old son, a chemical engineer, from falling victim to a sophisticated digital arrest fraud that could have cost the family Rs 12 lakh. The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon, just days after the elderly man attended a police-led awareness session on cyberfraud at a local senior citizens' club.
The Elaborate Scam Unfolds
The ordeal began on Sunday morning when the chemical engineer received a call via a messaging app from individuals claiming to be officials from the Mumbai police crime branch. The fraudsters informed him that they had intercepted a parcel containing drugs and five passports booked in his name, threatening him with immediate arrest if he did not comply with their demands.
The scammers instructed the engineer to download a private messaging app on both his and his wife's cellphones, warning them not to disconnect the calls until permitted. Shortly after, a person dressed in a police uniform initiated a video call through the app, placing the couple under what they termed a "digital arrest." The fake officer advised them not to discuss the situation with anyone else and promised a police clearance certificate after questioning.
A Marathon Video Call and Growing Suspicion
From 11 am on Sunday until 2:30 pm on Monday, the engineer and his wife remained on the video call, even while sleeping. When their son inquired about the ongoing call, they misleadingly explained it as an online meeting. The fraudster proceeded to inquire about the engineer's bank balance and investments.
The situation escalated when the bogus officer directed the engineer to withdraw Rs 12 lakh from his mutual funds and transfer the amount to a specified bank account. It was at this critical juncture that the engineer grew suspicious and decided to inform his father about the unusual demands.
Timely Intervention and Police Action
Managing to divert the scammer's attention during the video call, the engineer briefly explained the situation to his father. The 81-year-old, recalling the cyberfraud awareness session he had attended, immediately alerted the Pimpri Chinchwad cyberpolice. A rapid response team from the cyberpolice and Nigdi police rushed to the engineer's home.
The moment police personnel entered the room, the fraudsters disconnected the video call. Officers confirmed to the engineer that he had been targeted by a sophisticated scam, preventing the transfer of Rs 12 lakh. "The engineer was about to transfer Rs 12 lakh. But, his father's timely alert saved his money," stated an officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad cyberpolice.
The Role of Awareness and Technology
Authorities highlighted that the senior citizen's proactive response was directly influenced by his participation in ongoing police awareness programs on cyberfraud for senior citizens and housing societies. Additionally, he had installed the Jyesthanubandh app on his cellphone, an initiative launched by Pimpri Chinchwad Commissioner of Police Vinoy Kumar Choubey to enhance community safety.
"The awareness session and the app helped the senior citizen save Rs 12 lakh of his son," the officer emphasized, underscoring the importance of public education in combating digital crimes. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals and the critical role of informed vigilance in preventing financial losses.
