Pune Teacher Defrauded of Rs 4.5 Lakh in Online Steel Supply Scam

In a distressing incident of cyber fraud, a 46-year-old teacher from Vishrantwadi, Pune, was duped of Rs 4.50 lakh by criminals posing as steel suppliers for her house construction project. The scam, which occurred in December last year, has led to a formal case being registered with the Vishrantwadi police on Thursday, following preliminary investigations initiated after the victim filed an online complaint.

How the Scam Unfolded

According to an officer from the Vishrantwadi police, the complainant was in the process of building her new house and sought to purchase steel materials. She discovered a Jalna-based supplier online and contacted the number listed on the website. Lured by the promise of low rates, she was persuaded to make an advance payment for the steel.

The next day, the fraudster contacted her again, urging her to expand her order for bulk delivery. He repeatedly cited excuses to delay the supply, raising her suspicions. Growing wary, the woman decided to verify the authenticity of the company by obtaining its official contact number directly.

Realisation and Police Action

Upon contacting the actual steel company, she was informed that they did not offer any online sales facilities. This revelation confirmed her fears that she had fallen victim to a sophisticated scam. Immediately, she approached the Vishrantwadi police to report the fraud.

The police have since registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the matter. This incident highlights the growing risks of online transactions and the need for heightened vigilance when dealing with unknown suppliers, especially for high-value purchases like construction materials.

Authorities advise the public to verify the credentials of online sellers through official channels and avoid making large advance payments without proper due diligence. As cybercrime continues to evolve, such cases serve as a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity awareness in everyday transactions.
